• The FDA has classified conjugated estrogens in the pregnancy category X, thus establishing that conjugated estrogens cause birth defects in unborn babies. Avoid taking this medication during pregnancy or while planning a pregnancy. Conjugated estrogens can effect breast milk content and decrease milk flow. If you are breastfeeding, consult your physician before using this medication.
  

• It has been observed that conjugated estrogen can increase the risk of endometrial hyperplasia, a condition which may cause cancer or the uteral lining. In order to reduce this risk, physicians often prescribe a progestin to be taken with premarin. Women who have the uterus removed ( hysterectomy ) do not have this risk.
